Summer is slowing
down... I have been out of town for a week and
have returned to the most wonderful weather! The weather is in the fifties in
the morning and warm, low eighties in the afternoon. It is incredible! Late
summer in all of her fullness is such a beautiful time here!
First, I want to give you a little scoop. What a great summer it was! I am so
proud of the staff ...actually, I, perhaps, should say humbled. They are such
great young men and women. Their selfless and grand examples of hard work,
honor. and good examples makes me so grateful that they work with our children,
our campers. Camp, itself presents many challenges for the campers, and we
would have it no other way. Campers live in rustic cabins with six to eight
people, they have to makes decisions on activities and they have to deal with
and overcome a variety of hardships and challenges and the unusually wonderful
staff is there to help them. It is such a blessing to see our campers overcome
and deal and come out smelling like a rose and becoming stronger and more
confident. I say it is "letting them out of the box!" And in the process they
make friendships, often great friendships, have fun, gain insights into faith
and have the time to play, laugh, learn new skills and have a fantastic time!
What a privilege it is to help to shape these precious souls.
Secondly, after the Main Session, we have been in overdrive! We had a fantastic
Family Camp! We had nearly sixty here and it was great. We did a bit of
everything, including riding and trail rides, leisurely hiking and picking lots
and lots of blueberries in the incredibly beautiful high country. We gorge
hiked in the North Fork and jumped at Pucker's leap and we rafted the
Nantahala. It was great and it was so much fun to play with these families! We
have been busy!
Then came a most unusual and amazing week long camp/retreat for the Envoy
Institute. We had a group of high school juniors and seniors preparing their
faith for the challenges of college life. It was awesome. The Envoy Institute
flew in a world class speaker who talked in the evening and again in the
morning. Then we took the participants, in four groups, and rotated them
through climbing, hiking in the high mountains, hiking in the North Fork gorge
or on the ropes course with marksmanship and swimming. Then Envoy flew in
another world class theologian and we did it again for four days. The last day
we rafted the Nat and had one more speaker. It was "BLOW-YOUR-MIND" awesome!
We are expecting to do that again next year.
The same day that the Envoy group left, I drove down towards Baton Rouge to get
John set up as a freshman at LSU and help Sarah get settled for law school
there, too. I had breakfast with Andrew in New Orleans and headed back to
camp. I just got in this afternoon. It has been a busy, but wonderful time.
I look forward to Labor Day Weekend! We are having a REUNION for staff! I
haven't been back in the office yet, but it sounds like we will have a good
crowd. It will be so good to see so many of the old gang that have helped to
make the Kahdalea-Chosatonga vision become real. We owe the staff so much and
want to say another thank you to them with this get together. If you have been
on staff, come on! just contact the office for details; and if you are planning
to be here be sure we have your reservations. The weather is fantastic!
There are still
a number of groups coming! Can't wait...
As I sat here at the computer, I fell into a little nap... I woke up with a bit
of a start, thinking about the campers and that I need to get over to Chosatonga
and take care of details. It reminds me of the summer and the sessions we've
had since. Again I say, "Wow! What a summer!"
Thanks so much for everything! Truly, thank you!
God bless you! David & Anne

Internet Photo Policy
We have had internet photos during camp in the past and found that the staff we
hired to add photos to the Internet would continually end up involved in camper
support. Here, we naturally put all of our eggs into the camper basket.
We have found trying to run an internet photo service a distraction or a
pressure that we feel draws us from the mission. It requires lots of time
and oversight.
We have great staff and we work
to answer all of the campers needs. When we have extra staff, we focus on
the campers. It is our mission; it is our calling. When we do superb
work with the campers, we feel marketing will take care of its self. We
will put any photos we have on the net after camp or during camp if we get the
opportunity. Thanks.
