A Message from Camps Kahdalea and Chosatonga

Introduction

This is an important update regarding changes to the medical protocols at CKC for the summer of 2026. Our wonderful camp nurse, Tiffany Taulbee, is returning for another year! Having been part of our community as a camper, parent, and nurse, she is dedicated to ensuring a smooth and safe summer for all.

If you have questions or would like Tiffany to give you a call, please reach out to our office.

God bless, Jeffrey Trufant, Director

A Note from Nurse Tiffany Taulbee

I am so excited to be returning as Camp Nurse for the summer of 2026!  It is both an honor and a privilege to be a part of our amazing medical staff, supporting our campers’ health and well-being so that they can thrive here.

As a camp mom myself, I know how hard it is to let go and entrust someone else with your child’s care. So rest assured that I am working alongside a team of dedicated camp staff to make improvements that will boost the safety and efficiency of our medical processes at camp.

The 2026 Medication Requirement

For the third consecutive year, we are requiring ALL parents to partner with CampMeds if you plan to send your child to camp with daily medication.

Why this is necessary: Over the last five years, medication usage has increased significantly; last year, 26% of our campers required daily medication. To exceed standards set by the American Camping Association and the Alliance for Camp Health, we utilize CampMeds for three primary reasons:

  1. Safety & Protection: Each dose is in a sealed bag, protecting it from mountain heat and humidity.
  2. Accuracy: Every bag is labeled with the camper’s name, medication, dose, and the exact date/time of administration.
  3. Efficiency: Standardized packaging allows nurses to move through lines quickly, so campers spend less time waiting and more time having fun.

How CampMeds Works: Action Steps for Parents

  1. Health Form Reconciliation: List every medication your child will NEED on your camper’s Health Form. Nurses will check arriving meds against this form.
  2. Register: Visit the CampMeds website to register your camper.
  3. Provider Coordination: CampMeds will send you a registration email with a letter for your doctor. Provide this to your physician so they can submit the prescriptions to the CampMeds pharmacy.
  4. Insurance: The pharmacy bills insurance when camp begins. Please request a “vacation override” from your insurance provider for the start date of camp to ensure coverage.

Important Details & Exceptions

  • Daily Medications: This requirement includes all prescriptions, daily Over The Counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, and supplements. Our nurses cannot accept medication on Opening Day that has not been dispensed by a pharmacist.
  • Non-Packaged Items: CampMeds does not package insulin, injectables, birth control, or Accutane.
    • Action: Send these to camp in a Ziploc bag with the camper’s name, in the original container with the prescription attached.
  • Common OTC Stock: The Infirmary maintains a full stock of “as-needed” remedies (antihistamines, Tylenol/Advil, cough drops, anti-itch creams, antacids, Miralax, etc.). Do not send these if they are only for occasional use.
  • Extended Stays: If your camper is staying longer than 30 days, a refill will be sent from Camp Meds automatically. For controlled substances (e.g., Adderall, Concerta), ensure your doctor sends two separate 30-day prescriptions.

Once again, it gives me great joy to build and shape our Health Hut and Infirmary at camp into something that nourishes and cares for our campers without slowing them down. We want everyone to maintain robust health at camp, and sometimes that includes supporting campers as they continue their medication regimens that keep them healthy at home. I am honored to partner with all our parents in maintaining the health of our whole camp community so everyone can experience the magic of Camps Kahdalea and Chosatonga!
