One phrase you will commonly hear spoken in our valleys is this, “Pull out the gold”. Jesus teaches, “From the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks”. So often we can use our tongues to manipulate, self aggrandize, tear down, or detract from others. It’s easy enough to do and often reveals our own insecurities! However, in our Camp culture, we emphasize putting a magnifying glass up to those characteristics of our neighbor that we admire, those virtues that are beautiful and that we would like to see grow. This method of praise and affirmation is not flattery, but a sincere acknowledgment of the good we have the privilege of witnessing in every human heart. Indeed, every camper that comes through our gates is a treasure trove of personal virtues and fascinating depth. Sure, they also have their faults, but who doesn’t! Practicing this careful and intentional approach to speech is essential to a healthy community and we strive to create a rich and kind environment at camp.
In addition to pulling out the gold, it is also helpful to hear words of encouragement! We are inviting our entire camp community to encourage our staff as they tend the garden a beautiful and blossoming human relationships in front of us. If you don’t mind, please consider taking a moment to share a scripture, and encouraging word, a story from your own camp experience, or simply a virtual hi-fi. All of these things will be shared with our staff in the coming days. Thank you for praying and pouring in!
